To better understand the concept behind culinary travel, one must first understand culinary tourism and all that such provides. As such, if one is interested in knowing more about culinary tourism, one may want to request an information package from the International Culinary Tourism Institute, founded in 2006, which is a non-profit education organization for training and education for its members and the public. Of course, there are also many other organizations involved in culinary tourism which one can also find online.
So, what exactly is culinary tourism? it is when one travels to a country or region with the specific intention of experiencing the food native to such an area. As such, dining out has become a valid part of the tourism experience. So, whether one is in the mood for Spanish cuisine from Spain, or food from the Middle East, when one actively travels to such areas in order to experience such native cuisine, then one is often considered a culinary tourist.
In addition, now that food has become an accepted and valid aspect of tourism, it is also believed that food as well as accommodations, climate and scenery all play an active role in such travel experiences. In addition, as individuals often dine out during vacations, while those on vacation may not experience the full art of culinary tourism, most likely one is going to still experience several culinary delights on such travels. As such, this tourism then becomes part and parcel to most vacations whether family, romantic or otherwise.
Still, as food tourism is defined as the ongoing pursuit of drinking and eating experiences, it differs from agricultural tourism. For, although it may be considered a subset of cultural tourism, cuisine is in fact also a manifestation of culture both past and present. Still, culinary and agricultural tourism remain linked due to the growing of foods which are included in the many regional dishes prepared which use locally grown ingredients.
In addition, although one may perceive from the sound of culinary tourism, that all foods consumed as part of such a process are gourmet dishes. In fact, this is not true at all. For this type of tourism is often more about what is unusual yet memorable and tasty, rather than what is often exclusive, pretentious and overly priced. As such, one can expect to find both basic and gourmet dishes, as well as great beer, wine and cocktails in all price ranges.
So, how does one find out more information about such culinary tourism? Often, one can contact one of many culinary tourist organizations which one can now find online. Of course, one can also decide based on taste and region where to travel to experience such culinary delights. However, if one is interested in specific culinary tourism, one may be able to find some great deals by talking with representatives from one of the many organizations now listed online.
For, whether one contacts an International organization, or a more locally based one, often one can gain a great many ideas of where to go and explore when it comes to such culinary tourism. In addition, as there are often many different dining opportunities available in each region, one may want to read a variety of online reviews in relation to such offerings, along with menu choices to assure one is going to fully enjoy such a dining experience. For, only when one can see first hand how such restaurants operate on an ongoing basis, can one truly decide if a restaurant is one in which one wishes to spend both time and money.
To this end, regardless of the type of food one seeks, one can find a great variety when participating in culinary travel or tourist opportunities. However, to assure one is going to enjoy the atmosphere, food and service, one may want to read a variety of reviews posted by past consumers. For, only in doing so, can one assure that one is going to have an outstanding culinary travel experience in whichever region or area one may decide to visit for such culinary delights.
The first historical accounts of walnut trees growing under civilized cultivation was in ancient Babylon (Iraq) about 2000 B.C.; however, walnuts have evidently been attached to mankind much earlier by excavations from cave fossils as suggested by archeologists. There is a reference point in the Biblical record in the Old Testament, that King Solomon was growing nuts (identified as walnuts by some translators), however, the likelihood of these nuts being other than almonds is very remote, because of the almond nut image that was used as symbols commonly in Hebrew icons and stone carving displays in Jerusalem inside Solomons temple. The adaptability of almonds is much more likely for almond trees to succeed than for walnut trees in the climate and soils of Israel.
The Greeks were credited with the first certified improvements in the size and quality of the Persian (Iran and Iraq) today called English walnut trees through selection and cultivation. The Romans soon established the Persian walnut trees throughout most of Europe and much of North Africa, that have most popularly become known today as the English walnut trees.
English Walnuts, Juglans regia, were brought into the United States by Spanish missionaries in the early 1800s by Franciscan monks, who settled along the California coast. Because the English walnut orchards, that were rapidly established in Central California came from the seeds planted from those walnuts that grew in the Catholic missions, the walnuts were sold and distributed under the name Mission Walnuts.
Central California walnut tree growers today produce 99% of the total U.S. commercial walnut supplies of English walnuts. This production capacity of California also produces 65% of the world supply of English walnuts.
Famous chefs of the world use walnuts in many types of cuisines including meats, vegetables, desserts, and soup preparations. A world famous dessert–made from walnuts, honey, and paper-thin, buttered, flakes of crusts–is called Baklava.
Important commercial types of walnuts that are grown today for profit are Juglans regia, the English (Persian) walnut, that is mainly grown and produced in the United States. Trees can live to an age of approximately 60 years and grow to about 60 feet tall at maturity.
Black walnut, Juglans nigra, a native walnut tree in America is grown mainly from New England to Minnesota and Nebraska and southwards down to the Gulf of Mexico. The black walnut tree can grow to a height of 60 feet and can live past 100 years. Black walnut trees have been grown mainly for their value in making expensive furniture; the nuts are harvested in considerably large quantities to use in baking, ice cream, and in candy recipes. The nuts can be easily shelled into large pieces if soaked overnight in water. The nuts are known for their crunchy flavor, which is distinctively spicy and enriched in its oil content.
Butternut or White walnut, Juglans cinerea, is genetically closely related to the black walnut, Juglans nigra, that forms oval shaped nuts, with a thick corrugated shell, 2 inches long with white kernels; richly flavored and preferred by many people to have a superior flavor over other cultivars of walnuts. The white walnut can grow 100 feet tall with a life expectancy of 75 years. The white walnut tree is the most cold hardy of all walnut trees, growing vigorously in zones 3-9. The roots of these trees, like black walnut trees, will exude a poisonous chemical that kills other plants (phytotoxic) growing nearby, thus other vegetation does not grow well if located within 80 feet of the trunk of the tree. The tree has a broader, leafy canopy than other walnut trees, but the wood is soft and inferior.
Indian Fig, the lay name for Opuntia Ficus Indica, is a species of cactus grown primarily for its fruit, or tuna, as it is called. The flowers and stems of this plant have many medicinal and body maintenance qualities that make it fantastic for human consumption. Culinary circles call it the “prickly pear” mainly due to its green color and little barbed hairs that it has all around it pods.
No one really knows where this plant hails from since it has been widely cultivated for a long time. The main growing regions include Mexico, Sicily, Chile, N. Africa, Brazil, Algeria, and Ethiopia. It is believed that Columbus carried this, and it is known that the Maya of Mexico used it as well as the Nazca of Peru as early as the 15th century. Since it is a type of cactus, it thrives in dry, arid places with lots of sunshine and can tolerate drought well. I found out that humans have used it as food as early as 12,000 years ago. The more I learned about this plant, the more I became interested in writing about it.
Opuntia Ficus Indica is mainly grown for its fruits, which are called tunas, and it is available in commercial markets worldwide, though I’ve never heard of it before, so I know I can’t march down to my local supermarket and pick some up. Getting on with it, let’s discuss what it can do for you as well as your dietary goals.
Uses of Opuntia Ficus-Indica.
This plant is known to be a good binding and waterproofing agent when those old Indians were building adobes and such. With that waxy cacti material, this makes sense. I love the fact that it is a remedy for hangovers since I like to partake in a little alcoholic merriment every now and then. According to the National Institute of Health over at PubMed.Opuntia Ficus India fruits seem to be able to remedy hangovers by reducing the inflammtion which causes them. A double blind, placebo-controlled study was done on it with binge drinking college students and verified it. This is great news for who like to indulge in the occassional alcoholic beverage and go a little too far with it?
It’s also used as an astringent that reduces bleeding. This tendency to bind gives it an amazing benefit to excess fat that we may accumulate and get rid of it. It binds other things too but we’ll get to that in a bit. In addition, opuntia ficus indica treats gastro-intestinal problems like diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome, and its good for enlarged prostate gland conditions.
One of the most valuable properties is its ability to bind fat. This plant is wonderful for weight loss and weight management. And guess what? A controlled study was done on this fat binding process too. It turns out that the cactus fibers do some interesting things when it comes into contact with excess fat. It binds up excess fat and enlarges the size of the combined molecule, making it too big to be absorbed by the body. Then it gets excreted naturally. This process also helps to reduce cholesterol levels in the bloodstream. Pretty cool, huh?
This reaction also leads to a feeling of being full for a longer period of time since it now takes longer for your food intake to digest. There are a lot of incredible plants out there but this one is clinically proven to be effective at its job. Like milk, this wonder plant does the body good, as you can see!

Those who pursue a career in culinary will need to master a wide range of skills. In fact, becoming a culinary perfectionalist takes much time and effort. From endless amounts of hands-on experience to obtaining a formal culinary degree, a culinary professional will need to set many goals.
No matter how well a person has his or her culinary career mapped out, there are things that will go wrong. On the upside, though, to continue career in culinary, a person can keep the following tips in mind:
Tip 1. Expect to Be Overwhelmed, but Stay Calm
When first entering into a kitchen, the experience can be overwhelming, especially at higher-end dining establishments that serve a large number of guests on a daily basis. While feelings of being overwhelmed often take over people who work in a kitchen, it is important not to freak out. By staying calm, a person can prove that he or she has what it takes to effectively deal with highly stressful situations.
Tip 2. Just Get the Job Done
There is no need for a culinary professional to suck up to his or her employer. By completing the delegated tasks he or she is in charge of, the person will be well on their way to securing a good job position within a dining establishment.
Tip 3. Set Goals
A culinary perfectionalist will set goals. By doing this, he or she will not become burned out while working for a particular employer. Goals can include gaining two years of experience, working under a certain chef and much more. No matter the goal, a person needs to make sure that his or her employer is helping to achieve it. If not, it may be time to change your place of employment.
Tip 4. Ask for Clarification
When working in the culinary industry, it is imperative that a person ask for clarification about any duties that he or she is unsure about performing; this is especially important when it comes to preparing food. It is better to ask for clarification about food preparation than to prepare items incorrectly and have them served to guests.
Tip 5. Work Efficiently
The best way to work one’s way up the ladder with a career in culinary is to be efficient in the duties performed. By being efficient, employers will value you and offer advancement more quickly.
Tip 6. Be Aware
The best way to work both efficiently and effectively within a kitchen is for a person to be well aware of his or her surroundings. Culinary professionals must also have top-notch communication skills to inform coworkers about what is taking place in the kitchen. For example, if a worker is going to round a corner in the kitchen with a hot pan, he or she should yell out “corner with a hot pan.”
Tip 7. Go to School
No matter what career path a person takes to enter the culinary industry, it is important to obtain a formal education. In fact, many employers found in this industry will mandate that a person possess some type of formal credential from an accredited culinary institution.
Tip 8. Maintain Professionalism
People working in the culinary industry need to be professional at all times. From the way they act to the way they dress, it is pertinent that professionalism be maintained at all times. Work uniforms should always be cleaned on a daily basis as well as ironed. People who don’t keep themselves and their work stations clean will readily find they have little opportunity to continue career in culinary.
